Toni-Lenz-Hütte on Untersberg

Toni-Lenz-Hütte sits on the eastern side of the Untersberg massif, not far from Schellenberger Eishöhle. Enjoy its spectacular setting beneath the impressive rock faces of Untersberg and magnificent views—the small, welcoming hut is a rewarding hiking destination.

At an elevation of 1,450 meters, Toni-Lenz-Hütte awaits you on the eastern side of Untersberg. Because of its proximity to the Schellenberg Ice Cave, it is also known as the Ice Cave Hut.

Ascent from Marktschellenberg

In Marktschellenberg, you’ll find the free Schellenberger Eishöhle parking lot along Alpenstraße heading toward Salzburg. The ascent to Untersberg begins at the Passturm on the opposite side of the street. Following a well-maintained trail through a shady high-altitude forest, you’ll reach Toni-Lenz-Hütte in about three to three and a half hours.

From Austria or by cable car

In addition to the ascent from Marktschellenberg, you can also reach Toni-Lenz-Hütte from Glanegg near Grödig in Austria via the Christian-Doppler-Steig and Schellenbergsattel. It’s even more convenient to take the Untersbergbahn: glide comfortably up to Geiereck and enjoy a short walk from there to the hut.

Tip: Schellenberger Eishöhle

Just a few minutes from Toni-Lenz-Hütte lies Germany’s largest ice cave open to the public. Inside Untersberg, fascinating ice formations await, with around 60,000 cubic meters of ice that reaches a thickness of up to 30 meters in places. A tour of Schellenberger Eishöhle is an unforgettable experience, especially for children, and special admission rates are available for families. During the summer months, you can join a 40-minute guided tour of the cave daily between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
