Nestled in a mountain basin north of Kranzkogel at an elevation of 1,124 meters, Sellarnalm is a picturesque, rustic working alpine pasture during the summer months.

Sellarnalm, located on the slopes of Ristfeuchthorn in the municipality of Schneizlreuth, is part of the Aigner family’s farm in Bischofswiesen. The 12th-century farm is entirely organic and is run by Engelbert Aigner Jr. and his wife Alexandra. They receive help with the daily work on the farm from their grandparents, Engelbert and Walli, and their uncle Thomas and aunt Christine. In the spring, cows and calves are herded from the barn at home up to the alpine pasture to spend the summer on the lush mountain meadows.

The cows are milked daily on the alpine pasture, where the Sennerin transforms the fresh milk into butter, fresh cheese, and semi-hard cheese. Hikers and mountain bikers are always welcome to relax and enjoy a hearty alpine snack. Tucked away from the busiest trails, Sellarnalm is one of the region’s more secluded alpine pastures, offering peace and quiet instead of crowds.

Tip: Hike up Ristfeuchthorn

Just before the state border with Austria lies the Schneizlreuth district of Ristfeucht. From here, you’ll first climb uphill along a steep dirt road through a ravine. At a wayside shrine, the trail curves to the right and reaches the alpine pastures of the Sellarn. During the summer months, traditional alpine farming continues here in its simplest form.

The trail then leads you to Ristfeuchthorn through a hollow into the forest, winding gently up and down until you reach a fork. There, the ascent from Schneizlreuth joins your route. From there, the combined trail continues upward to Ristfeuchthorn, whose summit cross stands on a secondary peak at 1,566 meters.
