The Eagle's Nest is located at 1,834 meters above Berchtesgaden. Its history is inextricably linked to that of the Obersalzberg. Between 1933 and 1945, it was the most important center of power of the National Socialist dictatorship after Berlin, where decisions on persecution, war and genocide were made.

The Eagle's Nest and its history

Built in 1937/38, the so-called teahouse was intended to serve as a place of political representation away from the public eye during the Nazi era. In fact, the Eagle's Nest was of little significance. Hitler himself visited it only rarely and only to receive diplomats or other foreign guests. The Nazi entourage gathered at Obersalzberg used it much more frequently for recreation and private celebrations. The history of the Eagle's Nest is summarized in an exhibition by the Institute of Contemporary History, which can be found on the sun terrace of the house. Historical photographs and accompanying texts provide an insight into the changes to the Obersalzberg since 1933, the construction of the Eagle's Nest Road with the Eagle's Nest and its use for tourism from 1945 to the present day. Admission to this exhibition is included in your Eagle's Nest ticket. If you would like to learn more about the history, you are welcome to visit the Obersalzberg Documentation near the Eagle's Nest bus departure point. This place of learning and remembrance for the history of the Obersalzberg and the Nazi dictatorship offers regular events, public tours and an extensive educational program in addition to the permanent exhibition.

Eagle's Nest and the Eagle's Nest today

The road from Obersalzberg to the Eagle's Nest parking lot is unique in the world. The Eagle's Nest road is six and a half kilometers long. The buses specially designed for this route take around 15 minutes. The Eagle's Nest Road overcomes the enormous difference in altitude of 800 meters with just one hairpin bend. The journey takes you through five tunnels. In winter, the Eagle's Nest Road is closed due to the high risk of avalanches. A snow depth of three meters is not uncommon here. In summer, permanent inspections of the rock are necessary to guarantee safe driving. In 1952, the Eagle's Nest road was closed to private transport and a regular bus service was set up to the Eagle's Nest parking lot. The bus departure point is located next to the Obersalzberg documentation center and the Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden.

FAQ

With the electric bus to the Eagle's Nest

After two years of preparation, technical adjustments and numerous test drives, eight electric buses have been available for the Eagle's Nest line since the end of June 2023. Each bus has 41 seats and takes visitors to the top comfortably and quietly.

Through the tunnel to the elevator

The route from the parking lot to the Eagle's Nest is a very special experience: a tunnel lined with natural stone leads 124 meters through the rock massif to a magnificent, brass-clad elevator. The historic elevator, which is now operated with state-of-the-art technology, takes you another 124 meters directly up to the Eagle's Nest. Your ticket includes the ride in the elevator. You also have the option of walking to the Eagle's Nest. The walk takes around 25 minutes. Sturdy footwear is recommended for the ascent. To mark 150 years of the Berchtesgadener Land being part of Bavaria, the Bavarian state transferred the property to a foundation in 1960. The proceeds are used for charitable purposes.

Directions on foot: From Ofnerboden to the Eagle's Nest

At the Schiffererhütte at Ofnerboden on the Roßfeld-Panoramastraße, a well-trodden path leads into the forest to an asphalt road that is closed to public traffic. We hike along this road over numerous hairpin bends through a cirque between Kehlriedel and Hochfeld on the north side of the Kehlstein. The marked hiking trail to the Kehlsteinhaus ends at the bus turning platform 124 meters below the Kehlsteinhaus. From the bus turning platform, we hike along the asphalt hiking trail in serpentines to the Kehlsteinhaus at 1,834 meters. It is only a few meters to the summit. The Kehlstein circular trail begins at the summit and offers impressive alpine views of the bizarre rocky landscape of the Hoher Göll.

Limited accessibility at the Eagle's Nest

Low-floor buses with designated spaces for wheelchair users run on the road, which is closed to private traffic, and take you safely to the Eagle's Nest and back again (RVO line 849). The tunnel from the Eagle's Nest parking lot to the elevator that takes guests up to the Eagle's Nest, 124 m higher, is paved and wheelchair-accessible. There are designated disabled toilets at the RVO bus stops (Hintereck parking lot; Kehlsteinhaus parking lot) and in the Kehlsteinhaus restaurant. The restaurant and parts of the garden terrace are barrier-free. However, it is advisable to visit the Eagle's Nest with an accompanying person. There are a few steps to climb to reach the large fireplace room. The summit cross is not accessible by wheelchair.

Eagle's Nest Tours: English-language guided tours at the Eagle's Nest

David Harper and his team offer guided tours in English: The four-hour tour emphasizes the historical significance of the entire mountain, not just the Eagle's Nest teahouse.

The tour is divided into three parts:

  • A drive to and guided tour of the Eagle's Nest
  • a driving and educational tour of the Obersalzberg (the site of Hitler's former residence and alpine redoubt, but no longer standing)
  • a visit to the Obersalzberg Documentation Center, with access to the underground bunker system (this visit gives an impression of the monumental size of the former headquarters in the Bavarian Alps)
