The Eagle's Nest is located at 1,834 meters above Berchtesgaden. Its history is inextricably linked to that of the Obersalzberg. Between 1933 and 1945, it was the most important center of power of the National Socialist dictatorship after Berlin, where decisions on persecution, war and genocide were made.
The Eagle's Nest and its history
Built in 1937/38, the so-called teahouse was intended to serve as a place of political representation away from the public eye during the Nazi era. In fact, the Eagle's Nest was of little significance. Hitler himself visited it only rarely and only to receive diplomats or other foreign guests. The Nazi entourage gathered at Obersalzberg used it much more frequently for recreation and private celebrations. The history of the Eagle's Nest is summarized in an exhibition by the Institute of Contemporary History, which can be found on the sun terrace of the house. Historical photographs and accompanying texts provide an insight into the changes to the Obersalzberg since 1933, the construction of the Eagle's Nest Road with the Eagle's Nest and its use for tourism from 1945 to the present day. Admission to this exhibition is included in your Eagle's Nest ticket. If you would like to learn more about the history, you are welcome to visit the Obersalzberg Documentation near the Eagle's Nest bus departure point. This place of learning and remembrance for the history of the Obersalzberg and the Nazi dictatorship offers regular events, public tours and an extensive educational program in addition to the permanent exhibition.
Eagle's Nest and the Eagle's Nest today
The road from Obersalzberg to the Eagle's Nest parking lot is unique in the world. The Eagle's Nest road is six and a half kilometers long. The buses specially designed for this route take around 15 minutes. The Eagle's Nest Road overcomes the enormous difference in altitude of 800 meters with just one hairpin bend. The journey takes you through five tunnels. In winter, the Eagle's Nest Road is closed due to the high risk of avalanches. A snow depth of three meters is not uncommon here. In summer, permanent inspections of the rock are necessary to guarantee safe driving. In 1952, the Eagle's Nest road was closed to private transport and a regular bus service was set up to the Eagle's Nest parking lot. The bus departure point is located next to the Obersalzberg documentation center and the Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden.
