The Ramsau Painters' Trail takes you from the center of this mountaineering village, following in the footsteps of 19th-century painters, past the Parish Church of St. Sebastian, through the mystical Zauberwald, and on to the idyllic Hintersee. Discover the scenes depicted by famous landscape painters in Ramsau!
At the beginning of the 19th century, a vibrant artists’ colony sprang up on Lake Hintersee. Renowned artists, led by Carl Rottmann, were captivated by the natural beauty of the area. Word quickly spread, and artists came from all over: Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Wilhelm Busch, Hubert von Herkomer, Carl Spitzweg, Ludwig Richter, and Adalbert Stifter, to name just a few of the most famous. The trail takes you to the very spots where many famous works were created. This allows you to compare the scenes from back then with how they look today and discover each artist’s unique perspective. Along the Painters’ Circular Hiking Trail, you can view the masters’ paintings right on site. A brochure available at the Ramsau Tourist Information Office provides details on the locations of the individual easels, each featuring a work by one of the landscape painters.
