Experience a tradition around May 1

With a mighty heave-ho, the maypole is raised inch by inch in the days around May 1, until it finally stands tall in full vertical glory.

Beautifully decorated, maypoles across the Rupertiwinkel display the guild symbols of local craftspeople, along with the coats of arms of the community and its districts. Local clubs contribute their own emblems, painted in vibrant colors to represent their purpose. Depending on the village, the entire pole may feature Bavaria’s iconic white-and-blue diamond pattern—or a spiraling white-and-blue ribbon running from bottom left to top right, winding its way up to the Boschen, the very top.

Elsewhere—especially in Berchtesgaden and the surrounding villages—the pole shines in its natural form, freshly stripped of bark and glowing in the warm May sunshine. No two are alike. Each one stands proudly at the heart of its village—a true symbol of local identity.
