St. John's Church and inn in Piding

Johannishögl was first mentioned in 1312. The church of St. Johannes is a particular gem with frescoes from the 14th century. The church consists of Romanesque walls, a late Gothic vault and a Baroque tower. Not only are the outstanding frescoes worth a closer look, but the individual altars are also impressive works of art. The Johannishögl has been a special place of worship for many centuries. Every year on June 24, the church patron saint's day is celebrated. After the church service is over, the festivities continue with the consecration of the church in the neighboring Johannishögl inn, followed by celebrations into the evening and the lighting of the traditional St. John's bonfire. The inn was formerly used as a so-called estate, which only served agricultural purposes. For a long time, the estate was called Sanktjohannser, and the farm was also called Mesner, as the owners used to serve the nearby church as sacristan. The inn was opened around 1870 as a sideline to farming, so churchgoers were happy to stop off at the inn according to the old custom.
