Scheibenkaser on Untersberg

Beneath the towering south face of Untersberg, visible from far across the region, you'll reach Scheibenkaser. From here, you can take in one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Berchtesgaden Alps.

Scheibenkaser on Untersberg

Nestled into the southeastern slopes of the legendary Untersberg, Scheibenkaser blends seamlessly into the mountain's evenly sloping alpine meadows. Farther north, these gentle pastures give way to the towering cliffs that define Untersberg's dramatic landscape.

The Kaser, the traditional alpine hut, is built directly into the hillside, with its uphill side constructed of stone. Behind the hut, you'll find the trail to the Berchtesgadener Hochthronsteig, a demanding via ferrata that ascends the 400-meter-high east face of Untersberg. The route through Mittagsloch to Stöhrhaus also passes Scheibenkaser.

There is no road to Scheibenkaser, making the alpine pasture especially challenging to manage. Each spring, the alpine farmer—known as the Lusabether from Almberg in Marktschellenberg—drives his livestock along narrow, steep mountain trails to Scheibenkaser. In summer, the animals continue on to Zehnkaser Alm before returning the same way in autumn. It's a demanding and often hazardous journey for both people and livestock.

Hike from Ettenberg

From the Hinterrossboden parking area above Marktschellenberg in the Ettenberg district, the marked Alpine Club trail 466 follows a forest road before continuing through the woods and, finally, across open alpine meadows to Scheibenkaser. While the route presents no major technical difficulties, it is steep in places.

Several hiking routes lead to Scheibenkaser, but the hike from Ettenberg is the shortest. At a leisurely pace, you'll reach the alpine pasture in about two and a half to three hours. From the Kaser at 1,436 meters, you'll be rewarded with magnificent views over the Berchtesgaden valley, as well as Hoher Göll, Watzmann, and Steinernes Meer.
