St. Johannes Church and country inn in Piding

Johannishögl was first mentioned in 1312. St. Johannes Church is a true gem, with frescoes dating back to the 14th century. The church combines Romanesque walls, a Late Gothic vaulted ceiling, and a Baroque tower. The remarkable frescoes are well worth a closer look, as are the individual altars, each an impressive work of art in its own right.

Johannishögl has been a special place of worship for centuries. Every year on June 24, the feast day of St. John is celebrated here. After the church service, festivities continue at neighboring Gasthof Johannishögl. The celebration carries on into the evening, when the traditional St. John’s bonfire is lit.

The inn was originally an agricultural estate devoted entirely to farming. For many years, the property was known locally as Sanktjohannser and also as Mesner, a name reflecting the fact that its owners once served as sextons at the neighboring church. Around 1870, an inn was opened as a sideline to the farm, giving churchgoers a welcoming place to stop for food and drink after services—a tradition with deep roots in the region.

Today, specialties include house-style game dishes, hearty Bavarian cuisine, homemade cakes, and ice cream. In fine weather, the beer garden invites you to relax in the sunshine or find a pleasantly shady spot.
