Take a boat to an alpine pasture? Where on earth can you do that? At Königssee near Berchtesgaden! If you want to go to Fischunkelalm, you actually start by taking a boat across Königssee! You set off from the boat dock in Salet and follow the hiking trail along the shore of Lake Obersee to Fischunkelalm at the southern end of the Königssee valley.

The trail from Saletalm to Fischunkelalm follows the shore of Lake Obersee. In some sections, the trail is narrow and steep. Where it runs along the rock face above the lakeshore, a railing provides additional protection. The trail is not suitable for strollers.

 

Obersee, Fischunkelalm & Röthbachfall

Obersee is Königssee’s little brother. From Fischunkelalm on the southeastern shore of the lake, you can climb into the Röth basin or continue to Wasseralm, making Fischunkelalm a popular starting point for mountain tours into Steinernes Meer. Above the alpine pasture, you’ll find Röthbach Waterfall, Germany’s highest waterfall. Fischunkelalm serves food and refreshments during the summer months—perfect for a break after your hike along Lake Obersee.

The trail along Lake Obersee follows a narrow path along the rocky shore. Watch out for damp and slippery sections, even in dry weather.

Directions

Start at the Salet boat dock and follow the wide hiking trail to the right. Pass Gasthaus Saletalm and, just beyond the creek flowing from Lake Obersee into Lake Königssee, you’ll reach a fork. The trail to the right leads to the Sagerecksteig and Almhütte Saletalm. Keep left instead and enjoy an easy walk uphill to Lake Obersee. Follow the well-secured trail along the right shore—this time without a boat or swim fins—to Fischunkelalm at an elevation of 620 meters.

Southeast of the alpine pasture, continue through a small stretch of forest. Then you’ll see the waters of Röthbach Waterfall plunging dramatically into the valley.

Return the same way.
