Along with its reflecting pools and fountains, the rows of Japanese cherry trees are the defining feature of Kurgarten Berchtesgaden.
Kurgarten Berchtesgaden, the town’s historic spa garden next to AlpenCongress Berchtesgaden, is laid out in the French formal garden style, with straight lines and right angles defining its design. Along with the reflecting pools and fountains, the rows of Japanese cherry trees are particularly eye-catching.
Cherry blossoms in Berchtesgaden
Every spring, usually from mid-April to early May, the Japanese cherry trees bloom in Kurgarten Berchtesgaden. Thousands of pink blossoms transform the park into a sea of flowers. But this spectacular display is fleeting: the cherry trees remain in full bloom for only about 10 to 14 days.
Kurgarten Berchtesgaden isn’t just a wonderful place to linger, relax, and take a moment for yourself in spring. At any time of year, you can take a break here and enjoy the park’s special atmosphere.
Many locals spend their lunch breaks in Kurgarten. In summer, the park also hosts numerous events, especially atmospheric evening concerts. If you’re attending a conference, seminar, exhibition, or another event at the neighboring AlpenCongress Berchtesgaden, the garden is an ideal place to relax between sessions.
A stroll beneath the canopy of cherry trees and alongside the reflecting pools is a refreshing way to recharge during a long workday or seminar.
The Ludwig Ganghofer Monument
In 1955, on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the famous regional writer, the Ludwig Ganghofer Monument was moved from its former location on Hanielstraße in front of Villa Kanzel to the southeastern part of the spa gardens, where it can still be admired today. The design was by Chief Architect Hans Gräßl; the casting was done by Ferdinand von Miller of Munich; and the head relief was designed by Reinhold Fitz.
