Located on the northern slopes of Hochstaufen (1,771 meters), Bad Reichenhall’s iconic local mountain, Steiner Alm is a popular destination in the Rupertiwinkel region. During the summer months, the alpine pasture welcomes visitors with refreshments after a short and easy hike.

On foot or by mountain bike

From Piding, you can reach Steiner Alm via an easily accessible hiking trail. The mountain bike loop to Steiner Alm also follows this route and passes by Kochalm shortly before reaching its destination.

You can reach the Hochstaufen mountain from Steiner Alm via a challenging hiking trail. Along with the standard route via Padinger Alm, this ascent is one of the easier routes to the summit. However, several sections secured with wire ropes make the trail on the north side of Hochstaufen more challenging than the ascent via the south side. Sure-footedness is therefore essential.

From the tree line onward, you’ll be treated to impressive views of the Chiemgau region, including Lake Chiemsee, and the Salzburg region. You’ll also encounter a striking rocky landscape.

Tip: mountain mass on October 3

Every year on October 3, the mountain mass at Steiner Alm brings together the beauty of nature and spirituality. The service takes place at the Hubertuskapelle chapel and commemorates the innkeepers of the Reichenhaller Haus on Hochstaufen, who were victims of a violent crime in 1993.
