The Neuhaus: a traditional inn since 1576
Gasthaus Neuhaus in the center of Berchtesgaden is an inn with a long tradition. Since it was built in 1576, it was open continuously until 1971 and has been a popular meeting place for the hungry and thirsty over the years. After years of vacancy, the Hettegger family has renovated the traditional inn with great attention to detail and brought it back to life with a great deal of commitment and passion.
History of the Neuhaus: beer instead of wine
The inn was built in 1576 by the then prince provost Jakob II as a court tavern. Until 1797, the house was primarily used to entertain and accommodate the prince provost's guests. Until the middle of the 17th century, only wine was served in the court tavern, as it was not possible to store beer for long periods at that time. In addition to guests of the princely court, the tavern also accommodated craft guilds. The inn was also the political center of Berchtesgaden, as mayoral elections were held here. The tavern remained in the possession of the monastery until 1797, when it passed into private ownership for the first time. The year 1815 marked a major turning point in the history of the Neuhaus: Anton Wurm, then owner of the Hofbrauhaus Berchtesgaden brewery, bought the inn. Since then, beer from the Hofbrauhaus Berchtesgaden has been served in the Neuhaus.
Since then, the Neuhaus has undergone several changes of tenant. The Neuhaus was only let to "tenants", i.e. leaseholders. It is striking that these tenants often died early and their widows married a new "Bestandwirt". The pub therefore had a long line of tenants until it closed for the first time in 1971 due to major renovation work. After that, the traditional inn in the center of the Berchtesgaden market was only open sporadically.
Wirtshaus Neuhaus, with its striking vaulted ceiling in the restaurant, has been open again since the end of 2013 and is very popular with guests and locals alike. The beer garden in particular, with its distinctive chestnut trees, is a real magnet for visitors.
