The ensemble of church and inn on Ettenberg is one of the most distinctive filming locations for the ZDF television series Lena Lorenz. Mesnerwirt plays a prominent role as the fictional “Almwirt,” where the series’ main characters meet time and again.

A Bavarian Wirtshaus

Mesnerwirt is a traditional, owner-operated restaurant with a long history. Bavarian and Austrian cuisine, Bavarian beer, and a wide selection of coffee specialties, combined with its spectacular location, have made the inn well known beyond the local area. Settle into one of two cozy, traditional dining rooms or take a seat in the sunny garden. From here, you can enjoy views of the Berchtesgaden and Salzburg mountains.

The history of Mesnerwirt

Historical records show that church sextons – known as Mesner in German – lived on Ettenberg from 1708 onward. In 1727, the Prince-Provost granted them permission to brew and serve beer. This came with strict conditions: they were prohibited from serving beer to young men and itinerant travelers, and failure to comply could result in the loss of their license.

Over the centuries, this former sexton’s house and beer tavern, just a few steps from Maria Heimsuchung pilgrimage church, evolved into today’s Mesnerwirt. In its cozy, traditional dining rooms or beautiful beer garden, you can experience authentic Bavarian inn culture.
