Our guidelines for cyclists and mountain bikers

Cycling on selected routes through the Bavarian State Forests is regulated through an agreement between the Berchtesgadener Land district and Bayerische Staatsforsten, the Bavarian State Forestry Administration.

Sharing the trails means looking out for one another — hikers, locals, alpine farmers, and mountain bikers alike. Respectful coexistence makes it work.

When you're out riding, please follow the guidelines for considerate, sustainable behavior toward others and the natural environment.

Guidelines for sharing the trail with hikers

  1. Adjust your speed and ride with control.
  2. Always be ready to brake and ride within your line of sight.
  3. Hikers have the right of way.
  4. Make your presence known early—and in a friendly way.
  5. Avoid peak times whenever possible.

Guidelines for respecting locals

  1. Say thank you: Most trails are on privately owned land and are maintained by local landowners and alpine farmers.
  2. Watch for grazing animals: Pass cows slowly and give them plenty of space.
  3. Close cattle gates and fences behind you.
  4. Watch out for oncoming traffic, including tractors and other vehicles.
  5. Do not build ramps.

Guidelines for protecting nature

  1. Stay on designated bike routes.
  2. Park only in official parking areas, not on land managed by Bayerische Staatsforsten.
  3. Respect trail closures.
  4. Ride during daylight hours only.
  5. Leave no trace—take all trash with you.
  6. Avoid sudden stops and drifting—this damages the ground.
