The Haus der Berge, the information and education center of the Berchtesgaden National Park, is located at the entrance to Berchtesgaden. In the permanent exhibition Vertical Wilderness, the unique nature of Germany's only Alpine National Park is presented interactively from the bottom of Lake Königssee to the summit of the Watzmann. The environmental education center and the outdoor area of the House of Mountains complement the permanent exhibition!

Information center of the Berchtesgaden National Park

The "Vertical Wilderness" exhibition is located in a large room in the Haus der Berge in Berchtesgaden, where visitors can get to know the local nature on a constantly ascending hike:

  • The entire spectrum of life from the bottom of Lake Königssee to the peaks of the Berchtesgaden Alps
  • The habitats: water, forest, alpine meadows and rock/karst
  • Sound and light stagings for the special moods of nature in a seasonal change

The highlight of the exhibition is the mountain showcase, whose slats at the end of the exhibition provide a view of the Watzmann, thus building a bridge between the recreated nature of the exhibition and the actual Berchtesgaden National Park.

There is also a cinema, the "Spiesbergers Alpenküche" restaurant and special and temporary exhibitions in the information center. Admission to the cinema, the special and temporary exhibitions and the library is free of charge.

The Environmental Education Center

The education center with its four modernly equipped rooms is ideal for groups and school classes. The four main habitats of the Berchtesgaden National Park can be explored and studied in depth in the Meadow Kitchen, the Water Laboratory, the Forest Workshop and the Rock View. Registration is required for the education center!

The outdoor area of the House of Mountains

The outdoor area, a place of experience and learning, extends around the Haus der Berge. In addition to the meadow, water and forest area, the Lahner-Kaser, a historic alpine hut built in 1848 in the Watzmann area, is located on the outdoor area. It was transported piece by piece to the Haus der Berge and rebuilt true to the original.

The Berchtesgaden National Park

The Berchtesgaden National Park was established in 1978 on an area of 210 square kilometers and is owned by the state. In addition to nature conservation, environmental education and research, the national park also fulfills recreational tasks and is an important tourist factor in Bavaria. The central point of contact for a visit to Berchtesgaden National Park is the Haus der Berge in Berchtesgaden. Accessibility in the House of Mountains

True to the Berchtesgaden National Park's motto "A national park for everyone", great importance was attached to the needs of people with disabilities when planning the Haus der Berge. Accessibility played an important role in the planning and construction of the Berchtesgaden National Park's House of Mountains. Various disability associations were actively involved in the planning and design of the Haus der Berge by the national park's accessibility officer. In the design of the building and the outdoor area, attention was paid to generously laid out paths and disabled-friendly toilets, which are equipped with appropriate guidance systems. The building is equipped with wheelchair-accessible ramps (max. 6% gradient) and all doors have a passage width of at least 120 cm. All exhibition levels are freely accessible via an elevator.
