History of the Bräustüberl
For a long time, there was no brewery in Berchtesgaden itself; most of the beer was sourced from the Kaltenhausen brewery. It was not until 1645 that Duke Ferdinand of Bavaria acquired the "Preustat zu Pfister" below the Royal Palace and built the court brewery on this site. This included the two beer houses Bier Adam, which still stands today, and an inn in Nonntal, the oldest part of Berchtesgaden.
There was no bar at the brewery at the time, as no license was issued. The beer could only be sold in barrels. Until 1890, only the brewery is mentioned, but never a pub directly at the Hofbrauhaus. The Hofbrauhaus was first mentioned by name as a brewery in 1890 in the so-called Fremdenzeitung, when a local singing group and the Bader brothers from Partenkirchen performed folk songs and the Schuhplatter. A certain Martin Oberhauser leased the Bräustüberl at this time and officially applied for a license. The Hofbrauhaus then belonged to Marianne Kriß until she handed it over to her son Rudolf in 1901. In 1906 and 1907, the owner had the brewery and Bräustüberl rebuilt from the ground up. The construction work lasted until 1910, so that 1910 can be given as the founding year of today's Bräustüberl.
On April 1st, 2002, a new landlord, Walter Bankhammer, moves into the Bräustüberl Berchtesgaden: The Austrian, innkeeper, butcher and musician, has been providing Bavarian-Salzburg hospitality in the Bräustüberl ever since.
Good food tastes good and has a name
Traditional food from roast pork to knuckle of pork from the in-house butcher's shop and fresh products from the region determine the Bräustüberl's menu. Most of the beef comes from Berchtesgaden farmers, the vegetables from neighboring Wals. The beer, of course, comes from the Hofbrauhaus Berchtesgaden brewery. With its historic brewing halls, the "Sternenhalle", the "Fürsten" and "Roten" rooms as well as the brewery parlors, the Bräustüberl has the perfect space for events of all sizes, for relaxing and celebrating.
