Adventure Mine Berchtesgaden
The Berchtesgaden Salt Mine - 500 years old in 2017
Visiting the most innovative adventure centre for salt mining in the world, you can become part of an entirely new and modern experience below the earth's surface. Nonetheless, the way the adventure mine is presented is still closely linked with revered mining tradition. Visitor train, salt cathedral, salt laboratory, treasure vault and mirror lake are at the core of a multimedia installation covering an underground floor area of approximately 6000 square metres. The Berchtesgaden Salt Mine has been in continuous operation since 1517. Salt deposits are detected in the area of the Salt Mine up to 300 m below the valley floor. There is a huge salt dome deep in the mountains, which was formed about 250 million years ago by the evaporation of an ancient sea. By the natural forces of the Alpine unfolding, the salt was sealed in the rock mass and for more than 500 years has been removed by pure spring water from the Alps as "brine” and pumped in a separate "brine pipeline" from Berchtesgaden to Bad Reichenhall. The Berchtesgaden Salt Mine produces a significant proportion of Alpine brine, which is further processed into Bad Reichenhall Alpine Salt of the highest quality by Südsalz GmbH in the Bad Reichenhall salt works.
